Once upon a time, when the game was new, Evern was the mightiest mob in Hibernia. There were no dragons, no epic dungeons, and no master level bosses. In each realm there was just one epic mob, and Evern was Hibernia's.

Mythic designed Evern's encounter to be so difficult that players would need to organize a large zerg to kill him. But characters are much stronger now, and it's possible to obtain Evern's trophy with a single group if you know what you're doing.

Evern's trophy was added to the game in version 1.75 on April 6, 2005.

Evern sits motionless in a circle of stones just north of the border between Mt. Collory and Breifine in the Hib frontier. The location is 25k, 64k Brefine. If he's not there, you'll have to kill the ordinary wraith drakes that serve as placeholders to give him a chance to spawn. When he finally appears, you should kill any remaining wraith drakes so you don't accidentally aggro them during the encounter.

Evern is not a particularly difficult mob by today's standards. The thing that makes his encounter hard is the fairies that spawn above his body. You have only a few seconds to kill them before they fly to their perches on top of the stones where they become almost indestructible. Once there, the fairies wait until Evern's health falls to about 30%. Then they heal him faster than you can damage him (unless you brought 50 or 60 friends with you, which of course is what Mythic intended).

The trick to killing the fairies is ranged damage. Bring three or four casters with dd's and have them target each fairy as soon as it appears above Evern's body. You have a few seconds after each one appears during which it can be killed. If you kill them all, Evern won't get healed, and the encounter will be easy.

If you need to start the encounter over, have everybody log out for a minute. Evern will leave combat and the fairies will vanish.
